Mao Gengsheng, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor, Expert of the Health Care Committee of the Central Military Commission. He is Chief Physician of the Department of Neurosurgery, Chinese PLA General Hospital, and Academic Leader of the Department of Neurosurgery, State Grid Beijing Electric Power Hospital.
He has been engaged in neurosurgery for 40 years. As a postdoctoral fellow, he studied under Academician Wang Zhongcheng, the towering figure of Chinese neurosurgery. He has performed nearly 10,000 open and interventional operations of the nervous system. He is a senior expert in China skilled in both open surgery and endovascular intervention for cerebrovascular diseases.
In 2009, he proposed and founded China’s first Neurovascular Surgery Department. In 2012, he took the lead in performing mechanical thrombectomy for large cerebral vessel recanalization. In 2013, he established the Institute of Neurorestoratology of Chinese People’s Armed Police Force General Hospital, the first institute of neurorestoratology in a public hospital in China, and served as its Director. He has compiled multiple guidelines in neurorestoratology and is a senior expert in international neurorestoratology.
He carried out large-scale open and interventional treatment for cerebrovascular diseases in the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force. He pioneered superselective ophthalmic artery interventional chemotherapy for retinoblastoma in China, which was supported by the Key Special Project Fund of Capital Characteristic Clinical Medicine in 2015. He was a guest expert for CCTV science and education programs Health Road and Light of Science and Technology.
He once served as Member of the World Federation of Chinese Neurosurgeons, Standing Committee Member of the 10th Special Committee of Neurosurgery of the Whole Military, Member of the Cerebrovascular Disease Group of the Neurosurgery Branch of Chinese Medical Association, Vice President of the International Association of Neurorestoratology, the First Vice Chairman of the Neurointerventional Branch of Beijing Medical Doctor Association, Standing Committee Member of the Neurosurgery Branch of Beijing Medical Association, Standing Committee Member of the Neurosurgery Expert Committee of Beijing Medical Doctor Association.
He is one of the principal founders of the Neurorestoratology Committee of Chinese Medical Doctor Association. He served as Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the 1st Committee, Vice Chairman of the 2nd Committee, and Chairman of the Stroke Neurorestoratology Special Committee. He founded the Neurorestoratology Expert Committee of Beijing Medical Doctor Association and acted as its Chairman. He also established the Cerebrovascular Disease Committee of Chinese Research Hospital Association and currently serves as its Executive Chairman.
His current academic appointments include: Vice Chairman of the Clinical Professional Branch of Alzheimer’s Disease Prevention and Treatment Association, Standing Committee Member of the Neuroanatomy Branch of Chinese Anatomical Society, Standing Committee Member of the Medical-Engineering Integration Branch of China Medicinal Biotechnology Association, Deputy Director of the Neuromodulation and Human-Machine Interaction Expert Committee of Beijing Medical Doctor Association, and Editorial Board Member of Journal of Neurorestoratology.
He obtained Postdoctoral Foundation support in 2007 and was appointed Researcher at the Key Laboratory of Applied Basic Military Brain Science, Academy of Military Medical Sciences. He has undertaken many research projects including sub-project of the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 Program) major stem cell project, brain glioma project sponsored by the Ministry of Health, key projects of Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission, collaborative research projects of the 13th Five-Year Plan, and military key research projects.
He received the Nomination Award for the inaugural “Bethune-style Good Doctor” by Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Beijing Excellent Physician Award and the title of Beijing Renowned Expert. In 2022, the technical application of Peripheral Nerve Balancing Surgery for Limb Spastic Paralysis after Stroke and other programs were approved as new clinical technologies of Chinese PLA General Hospital and the First Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital respectively. Since 2008, he has published 116 papers, with the highest single impact factor of 20.577. He has translated 4 monographs, served as Editor-in-Chief for 2 books, Associate Editor-in-Chief for 4 books and Editorial Board Member for 5 books.
His specialties include open and interventional treatment of cerebrovascular diseases, peripheral nerve surgery for motor disorders after stroke, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, spinal and spinal cord diseases, complex hydrocephalus, microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia, and peripheral nerve entrapment release surgery.
