Treatment of Cerebral Palsy with Stem Cells

Results

The mean age of the treated patients was 12.3 years. The oldest patient was 66 years old. Gender distribution rate was 1.1:1 (male:female). There were 80% of the cases reported improvements (Refer to figure above).

The type of improvements included decreased spasticity, improved motor functions, better posture stability and an improvement in mental functions resulting in improved communication. Sitting alone, standing and even walking without help were reported. Improvement of articulation and the ability to speak better was observed in 59.6% of all cases. A major decrease or even absence of epileptic seizures was reported in 49.2%.

First Improvements (N=500)
Weeks after Treatment Cases Cumulative Percentage
1 85 17.00%
3 118 40.60%
6 199 80.40%
9 79 96.20%
12 11 98.40%
24 6 99.60%
36 2 100.00%

Almost all improvements started within 9 weeks after the transplantation of fetal neuro stem cells in WSTC.

Conclusions

In summary, fetal neuro stem cells (NSCs) injected in the brain have shown to have a strong positive effect on the health status of nearly 80% of the treated patients. Stem cell transplantation seems to be a safe and potentially powerful therapy for this group of patients.
